Uncommon Sense?
Wednesday, December 26th, 2007Welcome back!
I’ve grown up hearing people talk about “common sense”. What ever happened to it? I don’t seem to find it being used, at least not very much.
Common sense says: if you drive too fast you use more gas, wear out the engine of your car and get speeding tickets. Yet, yo see people speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, endangering other’s lives.
Common sense says: if you use drugs, your life gets messed up. It’s illegal, dangerous, expensive and ruins you and your family. However, statistics show that drug use is up.
Common sense says: if you drink alcohol, you shouldn’t drive. However, each year DUIs are increasing, people get hurt and die.
Common sense says: if you can’t see where you are going, slow down, pull over and stop. Yet, recently in Florida over 100 vehicles were smashed up, their occupants hurt, some killed. Why? The passengers in these vehicles weren’t given a choice. The drivers sped down the highway into fog mixed with smoke and crashed. Why didn’t people do the simple thing and avoid the danger?
I wonder if people have forgotten that there are consequences for the things they do. When you make a choice in a type of behavior, you’ve also chosen to face the consequences that come with the behavior. It’s very simple, almost like pushing over the first domino in a long line of dominoes. You realize that one falling will cause others to fall. Your choice is simple, if you don’t want them to fall, don’t knock down the first one.
It’s almost like people have forgotten how to think or reason. Common sense is no longer so common. People in society appear to be running around like little children, acting impulsively; then, wondering why things don’t work out. We appear to have forgotten that there are consequences for the things we do. Also for the things we don’t do. If we don’t teach our children to be careful or behave, we shouldn’t be surprized when they misbehave.
Common sense says: Wake up, people!
