Bad Habits

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Welcome back!

I know, I know, I guess. Everyone has bad habits.

I guess the main difference in the many bad habits it is possible to have, is in the degree of how extreme. I have heard that some people can get so involved in the habit that it becomes a compulsive disorder. Those can be simple, all the way to severe in how they effect someone’s life.

I am no expert. So, of course all I think about are the simple habits. I used to bite my fingernails. My sis’s father helped me to stop. Now, I have to actually cut my fingernails to keep them from hitting two keyboard keys at once, very cool. (Healthier too) I know that there are polishes available for biters that give a nasty taste when nibbled upon. For me, just having to show my fingers each day, and being reminded about it if caught nibbling helped a lot. I sometimes didn’t realize that I was chewing on my nails.

Popping, or cracking my knuckles stopped when they began to hurt pretty bad when I did it. Now, when I see someone doing that, it makes me hurt to hear the pop.

I don’t know how the habits start. I used to twiddle with my hair in school when I was thinking. Found out that it drove one of my teachers nuts to see that. Now, I keep my hair short. Each person has to deal with their own habits as they go through life. I hope that I am not the only one who has found a small victory here and there.

Vacation Time

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Yes, it is hot. The kids are out of school. I however, have no kids. Sometimes I’m sad about that. I do however, have nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

The last time my husband and I went on vacation was years ago. We would love to go someplace and relax, have fun, see sights. The thought of having to travel can take some of the fun out of the idea though. Traveling on the highway with the traffic, well…..

I have flown (mentioned in an earlier article). I’ve even been up in a bubble helicopter. When I looked down, all I saw was my feet on a little foot peg, and the ground. EEK. Once was enough, thank you very much. We have never been on a cruise though. I’ve heard about Disney cruises, and I have wondered what they are like.

I went to Florida’s Disney World once, before I was married. Had fun, got some sun, saw a lot of sights, came home with good memories. Maybe a cruise could be fun, too.

Well, anyway, I wonder what other families will be doing this summer? Hopefully they will stay safe, have fun, and come back home relaxed. Be safe, y’all. :)

Weight Loss

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

I’ve been thinking. Yep, that happens sometimes.

I need to lose some wight. Well, actually a lot of weight. I’ve tried different diets. You know the one where you eat a small caramel half an hour before your meal. The diet where you eat only protein (I like meat and all, but enough is enough, plus I’m Diabetic - it’s forbidden) is tasty if that’s all you want to eat. My problem is that I like food A LOT.

A buffet is a nightmare for me. Especially if they have a lot of my favorites. It is really hard for me to stop once I start to eat. I have even tried to drink a large glass of water before each meal. I get tired of visiting the bathroom. On TV they talked about something from Africa called hoodia. I would like to know if it works. Something that kills the appetite, for me would be wonderful.

I’ve heard of “The Zone”, what ever that is, South Beach Diet (I hate the word diet. It after all has the word die in it). I wish there was a way to accomplish getting rid of weight that works all the time, for everybody. Maybe it’s out there.

Flying Today

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

I have been hearing a lot about troubles flying in these days.

I have heard about the costs, delays, and people being kicked off of flights for seemingly strange reasons. The one thing I haven’t heard about is cheap flights. I don’t even know what the basic costs are now.

I remember that when I had flown from Arkansas to Florida (on a DC 10 of all things), the flight had nice airline attendants, clean planes, but no movies or snacks. Of course this flight was only a couple of hours long, so who knows what is going on now. I have never had to take an overnight flight, or long flight so my expectations, well, I don’t have any I guess. Just hope that if I do have to fly, I don’t find myself in a bad situation.

Opinions

Friday, June 27th, 2008

I have been giving my opinion for several hours today. It’s been fun, and yet I have found some ’survey’ sites are not really about the survey, but about selling you “opportunities” to get things.

You get from one page to another and continually are presented with things to sign up for which will most of the time cost money. If you decide to pass on the “opportunities” you might be told that you have to take a pick from gold, silver, or platinum choices, or even some from ALL that are presented to you. That is NOT a survey. It is worse than phone sales. I put my number on the Do Not Call list to avoid irritating sales pitches. Now, I find them in e-mails (I use the delete button a lot), and on sites posing as surveys. YUK

The way I figure it, the TV has more than enough commercials on it; so, why can’t the advertisers be honest and admit that they are selling things and not try to disguise their sites as surveys. It makes me not trust the products being pushed.

Surveys, I thought, were supposed to be about opinions, not selling stuff; but, that’s just my opinion after all. :)

Airline Troubles

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

I am very glad that I do NOT fly on the airlines right now.

There was a recent foul-up which ended with a mother and a 2 year-old child being evicted from their paid for flight. Of course this was their second try for that particular flight plan since the first one was canceled and the place returned from the runway to the airport gantry (don’t remember what those entry ways are called exactly).

I remember when I had flown in the 70’s. The airline personnel were friendly and HELPFUL. That appears to be a thing of the past. It is sad though, since the railroad isn’t what it used to be, going state to state appears to be getting harder and harder.

A long waiting line to check in, rude people working for the airline, never knowing if you would even be allowed to fly. It does make me wonder how anyone, maybe I should say WHY anyone wants to fly these days.

Eating Place

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

Aha! I just found one of my favorite eating places on the internet.

It’s called Chuck’s Pea Ridge BBQ , in Temple, Texas.

I have never tried their burgers, steaks, shrimp, or BBQ. I seem to be hung up over their fried catfish. It is wonderful. The fillets are plump, moist, and cooked to perfection. Makes my mouth water. It’s served with fries, slaw, and those hush puppies that look like little tubes. On Fridays, you can go in and find that the catfish is all you can eat. It is pretty darn good in my opinion. Oh, if you can’t eat slaw, like my husband can’t, they let you substitute fries instead.

Every time that my husband and I eat on Friday, we never need supper.:) One of these days, I need to try their other items. My mother-in-law loves onion rings and got one, I repeat ONE order of them. The onion rings were about 4 inches across, and about 1 to 1 and a half inches tall. The basket that they came in was overflowing. She got the Senior plate of catfish and couldn’t finish anything. She took the rest home for another meal, later. The people that work there are friendly and the service is right on time. We live in Belton and the restaurant is in Temple, Texas. I wish they were closer, although it only takes 15 minutes (approximately) to get there from where we live. If you live in Bell County Texas, you should try it if you get a chance.

V.A. Abuses

Friday, June 20th, 2008

The Veterans Administration is supposed to support and HELP the veterans of this country, the U.S.A. Yet when I look around, I see stories of the VA abuses or ignoring the same vets that have fought for our country.

Just read an article about the VA using veterans for guinie pigs (not sure how to spell that).Maybe I should spell it as the VA acting just as some doctors did during WW2. ABC did a report on some of it. I found out about it on a site called Off The Cuff.

Another thing it has been doing is to refuse treatment for things it has chosen to call ‘not service connected’ troubles. If the person was in the military, promises were made about medical treatment being available. Now the vets are finding out that this promise was nothing more than empty promises. This is a shameful way to treat those who have served us, not just the idea of “country”, but US as individuals.

Bored, Bored, Bored

Friday, June 20th, 2008

My husband, as I have mentioned before, has a strange sense of humor. This morning he didn’t even wait until I had completely awakened. He announced that he was BORED.

Our nearby friend had not yet shown up. He announced that he was so bored that he was 2×2 bored. Then he said that he was 2×4 bored. He muttered to himself some, then he said loudly - I’m 4×4 bored!

I asked him what he meant, and he told me that he was bored because our friend hadn’t come over yet. OY VEY, it’s going to be one of those days. Asked him why he didn’t turn on the TV, he said “tried that, bored”. He’d been working on a stereo but couldn’t get it open, said that bored him, too. Well, all I could say is “good morning world, it’s going to be another interesting day”. At least it will be a good interesting because while my husband said he was bored, he smiled. Some of his mutterings did not make sense, oh well. There was a knock on the door - tadah - our friend is here. Now I hear laughter and lots of talking, so here I am. At least he’s not bored any longer.:)

Oh yeah, if anyone points at you and says - “may you live interesting times” - deck the bum for he ain’t a friend. After all the TV news shows are full of what is considered interesting: floods, earthquakes, wars, accidents, robberies….need I say more?

Laughter & Common Links

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

As I sit in my dining room and type, I hear my husband and our friend cracking jokes and snickering in the background.

It helps me to think sometimes. Other times, I find myself listening to what they are saying and losing my concentration. The laughter that I hear is actually rather nice. I mean, that while I am on the internet, my husband is not alone without some sort of companionship.

Our friend lives around the corner so can visit almost any time. He has a good sense of humor (maybe not as unusual as my husbands, but good) and when the two of them get together, we don’t know what is going to be brought up.However, there is something else that they have in common, Dyslexia. It is something that can limit a person and cause them problems that can last a lifetime.

Diagnosing it can start the process to learning how to overcome it. Ignoring it or rejecting the idea of it can cause severe problems. My husband went to school when they didn’t know or understand Dyslexia in the manner that it is understood now. he was put in ’special education’ back when it wasn’t so special. He can read now. Not a lot, but enough to read his bible. We have God to thank about that, not man nor school. If you know someone who has a problem reading, DON’T assume that the person is stupid. That would be a grave injustice to the person involved.
