Irritating Commercials

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Welcome back!

Yes, I have commented on TV ads before. Here i go again.

Several commercials are so irritating that I find myself griping at the TV! Lot of good that will do. Ha as if.:) Well, anyway, there is this commercial where the man says his arm itches. The wife begins to pelt him with all types of tubes of medicine without once bothering to find out what type of itch it is. If I was the man, I would pelt her right back with all the ammo she has been throwing at me. Might get her to stop.

Then, there is this commercial. Someone is doing something that is making them happy. The face of a young man comes on and YELLS 1 flag! Then shows a scene from an amusement park with screams and stuff going on. The face of the young man shows again and YELLS how many flags that supposedly means that the amusement park is more fun. It doesn’t mention the cost which is in the double digits. The yelling is so irritating that I would not choose to go to that place, let alone pay that cost.

Why do ad agencies think that a TV commercial has to be loud and irritating in order to sell the product? It doesn’t work for me. It is a big time turn off. I wish the agencies would learn. It would make the TV viewing more pleasant.

The Squeaky Wheel

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

I was recently reminded of the old axiom - The squeaky wheel gets greased.

It is a fact of life that most people do not notice things when everything is going along smoothly. We have a tendency to ignore the things that work, and only pay attention to the things that cause us to notice them. Therefore the idea of the squeaky wheel being noticed, that something is wrong. Found another site on the internet (isn’t the internet a lot of fun!) that proved that old axiom. It remarkably is called, The Streisand Effect.

Over and over things get noticed only because someone made noise about what was going on. When living in Florida, the National Inquirer newspaper put an article in its pages that Carol Burnett had a drinking problem. She of course protested that lie. The paper put in a retraction article back in its rear pages. Right where someone would NOT notice it. Carol Burnett of course did not like the hidden retraction, after all the original article was put in the front of the paper, in a very public manner. She took the paper to court and sued. She only asked for 1 (one) dollar and a very public apology, which of course was only right. The jury agreed with her that the paper did wrong. They however awarded 1(one)MILLION dollars to her instead of the original single dollar which she asked for. If the paper had been as public with its retraction as it had been with the original lie, the court case could have been avoided. As it ended, trying to hide what it did wrong created more noise than if it had just done the simple thing.

We ourselves should become squeaky wheels when we see something wrong. We should not let only the arrogant noise makers be noticed. I’m talking about the Silent Majority here. Being silent has its uses, but not when things are wrong though.

E R Visit

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Last night was another one of those things that makes me glad to be in America.

My husband had been having big trouble with a headache and severe dizziness. He told me that the more the headache hurt him, the dizzier he was. Considering that he has heart trouble and Diabetes, with other things going on at the same time, and he has had TIA’s it got me worried that maybe he was on the verge of having a stroke. A friend was there when I talked to him about his symptoms and helped talk him into visiting the ER just in case. They did tests, took blood and other items, and let him watch TV while he waited.

They came back after a little while and said that his blood sugar was over 300, but they couldn’t find anything also wrong with him. Thank God that was the only thing they could find.

I know that there are some countries where a doctor is not available, let alone a good hospital with full services. Here in the US, we may pay a lot for a medical visit, but at least we have the option. My brother-in-law in Arkansas is another person who is familiar with having to visit the ER. He, too, can say thanks for the availability of medical care, although he has to travel over 60 miles to Jonesborough, AR, for his visits.

He is alive, my husband is alive, I am alive, other family members are alive. Yes, we have medical bills to pay. However, they are a whole lot better than having to pay for a funeral. The loss of a loved one is so much worse than a bill.

I have heard that there are some politicians that are pushing ‘Socialized’ medicine for the US. As a person who has used our system for 54 years, to me that is a nightmare. Yes, the costs would come down, supposedly, but the cost in human lives would go up.

In some places where there is ‘Socialized’ medicine, people have to wait and get an ‘OK” in order to visit the doctor, have an operation, get tests done. Many times by time the “OK” comes through, the person effected will be dead from a serious condition that went untreated. No thanks. I want to live, I want my loved ones to live, too.

Link - Laugh - Link ~~Maybe

Friday, June 13th, 2008

It’s been less than a year since I first started to blog. The first link that I managed to put in was a BIG mess.:)

I tried and tried to ‘link’ something in my post and almost went crazy with the way I really messed up what I had written. A lot of the words disappeared, the very site that I wanted to mention and talk about couldn’t be found. OY VEY I was worried that I had totally messed up my site.

Well, my family in Arkansas came to my rescue. Whew ! All I could think of was that I had left a horrible mess. Well, Thank God, It got straightened out. My sis came to my rescue, her husband tried to help, I was not left in the internet never-never land of foul ups. They both have new sites that are quite good. If you want, give them a try. A Short Tail & Comfort Fantasies .

A New Site - for me

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

My sister just Stumbled a site to me that I feel is really good. It has clean humor in it, which these days is really rare.

The site is called ‘It’s okay to be weird‘. What I saw made me grin and snicker. It showed something that made me remember the old joke from Abbot and Costello, you know - Who’s on first? If you want a laugh or need a laugh, try it out. You can’t miss.

I hope you enjoy it the way that I did. :)

Bed Partners

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

No, this is not of a questionable nature.

When my husband and I sleep we find ourselves four beings in a two person bed. Our pets have decided to keep us company. I took a picture with our phone of my husband napping. He is ‘occupied territory’. There are two fur persons who are also sleeping. When we nap, we find that we have to move furry people before we can roll over.

This has gone on for so long that if my husband wants to nap, he expects to have at least one cat if not two with him to keep him company. One of our cats will even ‘tell’ him when it is time to nap by climbing onto his lap and yawning widely. Since he has heart trouble, we don’t mind the bossy cat demanding the nap. She has also been known to wake him up if he has trouble with his blood sugar dropping too low. He also has diabetes. This alone has saved him hospital visits. If a Diabetic’s blood sugar drops too low, severe medical trouble can occur, so it is important to monitor the levels each day. The American Diabetic Association has important guidelines for monitoring blood sugar levels.

Some people might not understand how close pets can get to their family. I am glad that ours seem to care a lot for us both. The attention they show is greatly appreciated.

Digital Converter Boxes

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Found out something today.

First I need to give a web site that is important: www.DTV2009.gov . You will need to check it for correct, complete information.

WE got our 2nd box today. Our coupon had almost expired and we were able to use it first. The first time we got a box, the coupon was taken, the discount given, the box bought. Thought that was all that was needed. Today found out that the coupon should have been returned to us after being used, this for in case the box doesn’t work and has to be returned.

The 2nd store is the one that returned the card (coupon), and explained why. I have the receipt for both times so there should be no problem if things don’t work; but, I no longer have the first card (coupon). When you get your own box, please be careful to get the card (coupon) back after it has been used.

Full

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Yup, I’m full. Full of food that is.

Went to the nearby Subway shop and tried out their $5.oo foot long promo. Meatball Marinara is wonderful ! Of course always did like it. Ran into some friends that we hadn’t seen in a long while, so the visit turned out really great. There is nothing quite like a meal, conversation, and good company to make a person feel really mellow.

Where we shop is one of the general meeting places in our town. We never know who we will run into there, but almost always there is a friend or neighbor there. When I lived in the a big city (St. Louis, Mo.) I could shop all day long and not meet someone I know. Being anonymous is great in the big city, but I have found that in the smaller town, it can be quite nice to see familiar faces. At least you don’t feel alone. Your heart can be full with companionship while you fill your belly, too.

Homeless

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

Have you ever been homeless? It is an uneasy feeling, almost as if you are in limbo somewhere….not nice.

Too many in our nation are homeless these days. Some through bad things that have happened, some through sickness, some through disasters. There are many ways that people can end up without a place to stay. A long time ago I was there and it is a scary feeling. Some cities have places where shelter can be had for 1 night, ONE night. What about the rest of the year? Our nation is supposed to be one of the richest in choices, availability of supplies, availability of charity. Why are there so many without a place to stay? I do not understand.

Some of our cities have areas where the homeless will squat in old buildings that are empty; except of those who are desperate. They are unsafe, unhealthy, and many are on the verge of collapse. Yet, there are some who think they are lucky that they have those places to stay.

If we had been the site of great disaster I could understand that there aren’t homes available. Look what happened during the hurricane -Katrina for example. But that was supposed to be temporary. Right?

There are charitable organization that try to help. The Salvation Army is one of the most well known. They aren’t able to do everything though. What is the solution? Isn’t there a solution in our civilization somewhere?
