I Remember When
Tuesday, December 30th, 2008Welcome back!
Ever heard that before? Well, I really do remember when I was working in a machine shop.
I had a blast. They taught me how to read parts blueprints, inspect pieces to make sure they met specifications on the blueprints, how to use different types of measuring instruments. They even taught me how to use different machines, and different types of industrial clamps. When I was on my break, I was allowed to use some of the machines and scrap metal to make things. My boss was very lenient in letting me do those things. The idea that I was female never got in the way. Before too long, I had been taught how to be a shipping clerk, tool crib attendant, quality control inspector, and a machine operator. I would come home from work covered in machine oil, and metal shavings. When I said that I had a blast, I meant it. That job was more than just a job, it was fun. I enjoyed getting my hands on some of the different machines. I do believe that I was blessed with the type of employer that I had because in the 1970’s some jobs were assumed to be for males, and females were not expected to enjoy those types of things. I know that today attitudes are different; but, I am glad for the opportunities that I had before people got wise to female abilities also. ![]()
