Food Allergies

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Welcome back!

I have food allergies. My husband has food allergies. Others have food allergies.

This is not a simple subject. Each year people get sick, people die, families suffer because of food allergies. The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network carries a lot of information about what can happen to people who get struck with an allergy. I have made a link to this site. There are others that also talk about food allergies. Here is the web address for the above -

http://www.foodallergy.org/

Some of my husbands allergies do not cause a lot of problems. There are some that have tried to kill him. I now carry a list of his allergies, I wouldn’t remember them all without the list. I also keep a Tagamet tablet handy and Benadryl capsules for just in case. There are a lot of foods that can cause problems.

Peanuts, Milk, Wheat & its products The list goes on. Here are my husband’s, I will list the most serious first: Ginger, sourdough, turmeric - these cause a severe reaction and visits to the ER / cow’s milk, peach skins, horseradish, mint, sage, poppy seeds, plums - these cause other symptoms but can still be dangerous.

Food allergies are something that should not be ignored. My niece is allergic to chocolate. Her reaction makes it appear that she has used drugs and is high. A cola and a chocolate bar would make her so high we’d almost have to peel her off of the ceiling.

Many people have allergies, it is not something to be ignored. Every time that you have a reaction to something, it means that something in your body could be hurt or damaged. If you are allergic to Penicillin, you should also beware of sourdough for they are very similar in nature. That is something that we learned at the ER one night. It ended up being 2 visits in one because my husband had been treated and then released, had additional reactions and had to be checked in AGAIN.

Allergic reactions can be anything from mild flu like symptoms to severe aniphylatic shock that is life threatening. Please be aware of the possibilities, and be alert. It could save your life or some one else’s life.

Sorry this article was so long, but the subject matter is important.

Monday, Monday

Monday, January 26th, 2009

i do not have anything against Mondays as a whole, they just happen once a week after all. However, for those in the work force, they are the start of another day of work that will last all week.

This week is just another week, too. The weather is trying to drive everyone here nuts is all. It keeps flip flopping back and forth from warm to cold. Now there are winter weather advisories out for our area of Texas. Just north of where I live they have ice storm advisories. Oh joy….not.

Oh well, that’s life. :)
At least it is not boring.

Birthdays

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Today is my birthday. I never thought about how I would feel past the age of 25, let alone the age of 50. Well, I made it.

I am alive, basically sane, still opinionated. My hair is not gray, except for a few very small areas. I have had people suggest that I dye my hair to cover my gray. However, I wonder why, I worked hard for my gray I earned it honestly. I do not have any noticeable wrinkles on my face. Lots of laugh lines do show however. Most days I walk around with a smile on my face. I like the look that I get from people when they see the smile. Some just smile back, some actually look at me like I’ve lost it and they wonder why, some look at me as if I am planning the next great bank robbery. (snicker, snort)

The income that my husband and I have is below poverty level, we rent an apartment, we have health problems - so what. WE ARE ALIVE, that alone is reason for smiling.

So, if I am not the only one having a birthday today, as if I wouldn’t be, HAPPY BIRTHDAY !

Diets, Dieting, Let Me Count The Ways

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

I remember the grapefruit diet, the hot dog diet, the protein diet, the low carb diet, the high carb diet, the I’ll eat anything diet…..I guess you get the idea.

These days many are concerned about the best diet pill available. There are so many pills and diets out there that the list can be seemingly endless. What ever way that you decide to take to lose weight, do not go nuts. A balanced diet, exercise, if you are able to do it, and caution , helps. Some diet pills are said to be a great help, so do not be afraid to check out all of the options when you do decide to diet. One thing that has always bothered me is that some diets are only temporary, some should become a way of life. The individual choices are up to you. You should find the one that is easiest and most healthful for you. Me, I’ll keep trying. :)

Days of the Week

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Have you noticed how people are using days of the week to make things more noticeable?

After Thanksgiving they have labeled the next day Black Friday. This is supposed to let the customers know that there are sales and the stores might actually get rid of the red ink on their balance sheets. To me Thanksgiving is ‘Turkey’ day. Wednesday is the day before Thanksgiving. Tuesday is just another day of the week, I guess. Then there is Cyber Monday. There are more deals that people can get on things that we, the customer can get. Not everyone will be spending money crazily, but I know that the deals are out there. To me Sunday is the day that I enjoy going to church and having fun. To others, Saturday is the day for having fun. Can’t people be weird sometimes? :)

Memory

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

I have a computer that has a lot of memory that is occupied and not available for use. I wonder about laptop memory, because those things aren’t as big as my computer.

I realize that memory can be added, but I haven’t figured out yet how to do that. I really shouldn’t worry too much about that. I mostly use this computer for blogging and playing a few games that I get from one of the sites that are out there.

Doctor Appointments

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

I do not like doctor appointments. Some months there are a lot that we, my husband and his mom and I, have, and other months there are none.

This month we have had a lot. Unfortunately, because of lack of money we have had to cancel many of those appointments. Some have been delayed, some just canceled. I really tried to get one rescheduled, but that department never called back after I left 2 written messages. It was a colonoscopy, there is some risk for your life with that particular test. After the lack of respinse from the nurses in that department, I decided that I didn’t want to risk my life with people who didn’t care. That situation is very unusual with the medical place that we use. They are usually very dependable, so this happening is very rare.

The doctor appointments take a lot of gas to go to and from, then add the co-pay, and these things get expensive. Well, we do what we can with what we have.

Convenient

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Trying to get a new vehicle that you are buying and it is from another state is not convenient. You have to go through a lot of hoops to get everything set up the way the state wants it.

Making sure that everything works - okay. Getting car insurance - okay. You can even get car insurance online if you want. However, did you know that in the state of Texas you have to get a ‘Green Sheet’ before you can go to the revenue office? Oh by the way, the “Green Sheet’ is not green anymore. It is white. The sheet consists of a list and description of the vehicle and everything that has been checked and made sure that it will pass the code for inspection. The inspection itself lasted more than twice as long than the regular inspection. It was not very convenient for us, and our rumps got tired sitting on cold metal folding chairs - YUK. The vehicle is finally legal, but I never knew there were so many hoops to jump through to get it done.

Furniture

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

My house is full. I have book cases, tables, sofas, chairs, tv stands, entertainments center, computers. I have furniture.

What I need is probably storage or a bigger place to live. I have the feeling that I would end up with even more stuff, though. I guess that I need to learn how to eliminate the unnecessary junk that I have. The furniture that i have works for me and for my husband. The main problem that we have is that we are involved with a lot of different types of hobbies. Different types of arts & crafts, and all of the stuff that goes with it. Maybe we could use more storage cabinets with shelves and drawers. Not sure, maybe we should just try to clean house a little better. I hate cleaning. Shopping is fun. The only trouble with that is spending money, and getting more stuff that needs to be stored and not enough of the right type of furniture to store it in. :)

Can’t Think

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

Have you ever had times when you can’t think? Your mind feels fuzzy, your thoughts are disordered, and you find it hard to focus? Been there done that.

It ain’t no fun. Just try to balance a checkbook when the numbers don’t make any sense. I hate that feeling. It is not easy to errands or drive in any sensible manner. Muzzy, wuzzy, fuzzy head is not fun. Yes, I am griping. I’ve been missing sleep lately, and that leaves me with the problem of not being able to think.

It would be nice is there was a medicine that could stop the problem. However, every medicine can have its side effects. The thing that keeps me from getting my sleep is the pain in my bones and joints. My pain meds do not seem to work as well as they used to work. I refuse to give up however. I will try to think anyway. Ha, so there, I guess that stubborn does sometimes pay. :)
