Names
Tuesday, August 4th, 2009Welcome back!
Have you ever noticed how people will give names to events or places?
Sometimes it can be amusing, sometimes it can be very irritating. The word ‘Watergate’ always made me think of a dam that had floodgates in it. The nick-name for the St. Louis arch - ‘Gateway to the west’ - made me think of a corral. Westgate believe it or not is not the same as the arch.
WW1 and WW2, who decided that those two wars should have numbers on them? I mean that there have been so many wars in this world that the number could in reality be much higher. Nick-name are something that we all deal with. In high school my nick-name was AWOL. (I was caught cutting class.) The media is one of the sources of those infamous name that are stuck on things.
What is with the names? I guess it makes it easier to remember than just putting dates on everything. Sort of like the war of 1812? or not. ![]()
