Bullies

When I went to school in the 60’s we had bullies. Just like there are bullies today. I found myself on the bad end of a bully one time too many. There were things that had happened in my life that day which made it the last straw.
I won’t go into any details here. My response that day was to turn around suddenly and bloody the nose of my tormentor. That and a few words that I said. That person didn’t torment me again, although I heard them talking and saying things about how unreasonable I had been for hitting them. They never understood that what they had done created my response that day. There were other times that someone tried to bully me which no longer succeeded because I had finally had enough. I understand it now that those bullies had problems in their lives. That was no excuse for what they did to me or to others, though.
Most bullies themselves that I have met were really not very brave. They tried to pretend that they were brave by picking on someone they considered weaker than themselves. My response was not mild, nor unexpected in the long run. Today I thank God that my response was not as violent as some responses have been.
Bullies do not always think about how their thuggery effects others, nor what else might be going on that victim’s life. If you have the opportunity, stop someone from being a bully. It will help that person in the long run, and help any possible future victims.
I survived. Not every one does.
