Things Change - Or Not

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Welcome back!

Have you ever noticed that through the years (I am not telling how many), things change in society, and yet they do not really seem to change?

Slang is always the language of the age torn into pieces. What we speak now is slang from yesterday. Old fashioned at one time was modern at its own time. Fashion in the clothing industry has no idea what is truly new because it repeats styles. What the fashion world calls ‘it’ is many times not even connected to reality in what people will wear every day.

So, things change, and yet they still seem the same. The media is always trying to cause a panic over one thing or another, it just changes from week to week. One week money is supposed to cause a panic, the next it is housing, the next it is weather, the next it is one sickness or another.

Things change, and yet they don’t.

Hey Advertisers

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Yes, it is time for me to gripe about advertising again.

I have a few favorite shows that I like to watch. It get me that I am watching the show, get into the mood of the show, the next thing that I hear and see involves LOUD noise, nonsense, and irritation.

That is not the way to sell items, ideas, opinions, whatever. The television networks used to say that the commercials were not at a different volume level. How wrong they still are. When you have to turn down the volume suddenly during a show, and when the show comes back on, turn the volume up again.

The sudden change in volume really kills the mood of the show. I do not like advertisers who do that, and it makes me decide NOT, I repeat, NOT,to buy their product. Isn’t that self defeating in the purpose of the commercial?

Lady, you are scaring the neighbors

Friday, April 17th, 2009

I recently saw a commercial that had me saying that phrase above.

The woman was trying to get her husband to do something, or stop doing something. She had all of her face covered with pasty white something or another. Probably cold cream - YUK.

The way that I figure it, she should wash her face and then try to talk to her husband if she wants him to actually listen to her. I have no idea where the ad agencies get their ideas. Some are funny as all get out, others are nothing but irritating - at least to me they are. I am not happy when they treat the customers are if they are morons, or should be morons in order to buy their products. I cannot be alone with my opinions, can I?

The truck is Gone

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Well, the truck that plowe3d into the hotel building is finally gone.

The crew having to do the work of the removal had to re-enforce the inside of the building and eventually cut the semi into pieces to remove it. I guess that is one truck that will not hit the highway anymore, at least until it is melted down and remade.

Still do not know the exact reason for the crash. The police have said that the driver either fell asleep, or was medically unconscious. How someone could be asleep and go through 2 ditches, a pond retaining wall and ramp, I do not know.

More later, if it is given to the public.

Written Words

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

These days there are a lot of ways to present ideas. The written word is just one of the ways. If all of the politicians had to sign contracts that would penalize them if they didn’t keep their promises, it would be like finding diet pills that work. Or, how about advertisers needing to make sure that what they advertise really lives up to its promises.

So, what do we expect now? The advertisers are looking for new things, people, places to advertise. What will we be finding in the newspapers? the television programs? the radio? Sometimes it almost feels like anything goes. I know it is not the wild west, but some of the shoot outs with advertising going first one way, then another…leaves things up in the air.

The times are uncertain. So any words used should be chosen carefully. In the past I have had trouble with putting my foot into my mouth (all the way to my hip at times). I guess we should all think about what we hear, read, and see. It makes me want to eat some cheese, again. :)

Bad Grammar, Oh Please

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

What has happened to ordinary, plain spoken English?

Do you listen, really listen to the manner of English being spoken on TV these days? It makes me want to cringe, wail, and shudder. I remember how in school, the students would be corrected for any mistakes in grammar while speaking to the teacher, or to the class. The teacher considered it to be part of the job to make sure the students spoke correctly. Of course when turning in written assignments, grammar was also considered to be part of the grade that you would get on your assignment.

People in the public eye were held up as examples of proper speaking. No longer can that be done. Bad language (not cussing, although that is another thing), poor grammar, not speaking clearly, all of these things now show up everywhere.

The people in our country are starting to sound as if they have not been properly educated, or left school too soon. What has happened to actually trying to sound as if we might have brains in our heads, that we might have intelligence? Why did people decide that sounding uneducated was ‘cool’? Did they really decide this or has our education system fallen short? I wonder about that.

Digital Signage

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

You know how i have mentioned advertising in some of my past articles? Well, I have found that there is something called -digital signage. I’m not sure exactly how it works, but it is a new way to advertise or get your message out to the public. Since I’m not completely digital in my daily life (I do have a cell phone and computer after all), I can’t explain how this works. Thinking on it however, if there is something that will make some ads more interesting, wouldn’t people pay more attention to what they are seeing? Most ads I ignore or forget what they were about as soon as the ad is gone. That would seem to reverse the purpose of the ad in the first place. Making it interesting, would help people to remember it.

Progress in Iraq

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

There is progress in Iraq. Why isn’t the American Media shouting this for everyone to hear?

The London Sunday Times carried an article on Aug 6, 2008 that talked about this. Has our media in the USA gotten so fixated on the liberal agenda that it cannot be impartial any more? We hear all about the deaths of our soldiers, we hear about the cost of the war, why do we NOT hear about the victory?

I used to think that giving the news meant that facts were talked about, not someone’s opinions. We do not hear about the Mexican army personnel crossing the border and threatening our law officers, but we hear about ‘Celebrities” who mess up their lives. Whoopee :(

How are we supposed to find out what is going on when we are presented with sludge instead of information?

Fed Up

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Yup, I’m fed up with the media. First they say one person is going to win, then they say another. Since when did they become the big experts in how people vote? They don’t even listen to the average person.

Back when Truman was running against Dewy for the White House, the media was so sure it knew everything, that it had front pages printed with the banner that Dewy had won the election. History had proven them wrong of course. Again they were talking that Hilary Clinton was assured of getting the nomination. Well, we all know how that ended.

Why does the media continue to assume that they know it all? They appear to be out of touch with the average citizen in this country. They have continued to push the idea that being liberal is where most of the country is at, when most of the country is combined of a mixture of different people with each having a different point of view.

I sometimes wonder where they get their supposed polls from, because the people that I talk to do not agree with what is being quoted. I used to think that the news was facts that were being talked about. Today it is mostly opinion….theirs, not ours.

Bio-fuel

Monday, July 28th, 2008

There has been a lot of debate and talk about bio-fuel and bio-diesel. One of the previous articles that I wrote had a link to a site that explains the hazards of the making of bio-diesel. Check out the Great Fuel Debate.

I just read another article on a science blog that talks about making the bio-fuels easier and without as much hazardous waste. In the post, itself, an explanation is given as to how this can be accomplished. You would think the media would pick up on this because of the brouhaha going on in the media itself.

I wish the media would figure out that not everyone wants to hear about which ‘celebrity’ is going through rehab, and instead give us news that is more important. I realize that rehab is important for those who need it. The rest of us also need to know about alternatives for daily life.
