Homeless

Welcome back!

Have you ever been homeless? It is an uneasy feeling, almost as if you are in limbo somewhere….not nice.

Too many in our nation are homeless these days. Some through bad things that have happened, some through sickness, some through disasters. There are many ways that people can end up without a place to stay. A long time ago I was there and it is a scary feeling. Some cities have places where shelter can be had for 1 night, ONE night. What about the rest of the year? Our nation is supposed to be one of the richest in choices, availability of supplies, availability of charity. Why are there so many without a place to stay? I do not understand.

Some of our cities have areas where the homeless will squat in old buildings that are empty; except of those who are desperate. They are unsafe, unhealthy, and many are on the verge of collapse. Yet, there are some who think they are lucky that they have those places to stay.

If we had been the site of great disaster I could understand that there aren’t homes available. Look what happened during the hurricane -Katrina for example. But that was supposed to be temporary. Right?

There are charitable organization that try to help. The Salvation Army is one of the most well known. They aren’t able to do everything though. What is the solution? Isn’t there a solution in our civilization somewhere?

What Are Your Favorites?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

I have favorite things like cheesecake, family, books to name a few. Everyone has favorites. I like to watch programs on TV where people are helped. Make overs are cool because they give people second or third chances. Judge Hatcher helps families in need, sometimes when you’d think that things were hopeless. Extreme Makeover, Home Edition helps to restore families and give them security, a place to live when their situation usually was at rock bottom. Dr. Phil talks to some who might have closed minds or a weird way of looking at situations. I could go on and on and continue to list things I’ve seen.

Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries, local food pantries, organizations that I don’t know to list are here–they all help.

Our country was built on the idea of chances, opportunity, people helping people. We see this happening still. Telethons and other organized events, raffles and fund raisers–there are many ways to reach out. The U.S.A. is my favorite country, of course. I’m biased in its favor. I was born and raised here. It’s not perfect, of course, because it’s full of human beings. we make mistakes; but we also have chances to correct them. That’s my most favorite thing of all: A chance to live, chances to correct my own mistakes and the freedom to try.
